It's finally happened!! All of the saving, sacrifice, and hard work has paid off! You've closed on your new home and have the keys, its yours. You've moved in and if you are anything like me...you have dreamed of this exact moment for awhile. And while you were dreaming this exact moment, you came up a pretty nice image of what you wanted your space to look and feel like. But where do you start??? What should you do first? How do you make that image come to life?? I'm hear to help you do just that! I recently purchased my very first home and ran into this exact dilemma. I wanted my new home to reflect the type of person I am and also wanted to really stretch my wings as a creative interior designer. I was ready for the space I now called home to resemble what I see on the "reveal" segment of every HGTV show on TV right now. Let's face it, I wanted to "paint my masterpiece". This was my design Superbowl!!! It can be a little challenging if you are new to this entire process, so I'm here to help! Read on to see what I've learned going through this process and maybe learn from some of my mishaps.
The first thing I highly recommend is: TAKE YOUR TIME!!! I know, I know, this can be hard if you have been waiting forever for this moment. But it's honestly one of the best pieces of advice I can offer. Everyone told me to wait, take it all in, enjoy just being a homeowner. But, I just couldn't do it! I had an image and I was set! I knew exactly what I wanted and where I wanted and I wanted it now! So again, take your time. This is going to be the place you call home for a while. Enjoy it and things will come together. This process takes time.
Once you've come to that agreement, decide what area of your new home you want to decorate first. For me, it was the living/dining room. The main living area has an open concept, so I wanted to get this area done first so I would feel more comfortable having guests over. I didn't keep much from the apartment, so I had a nice blank canvas to work with. After searching online and looking in person at several stores, I finally decided what items I wanted to put in this space. Before I purchased anything, I made note of the measurements and used masking tape to plot the items on the floor. This gave me a pretty good visual of how things would fit and where I might have some room to get more chairs for the dining table, or maybe I needed a smaller sofa, maybe that accent chair would fit better in this nook. Those types of things. Placing the measuring tape on the floor really helped set the stage. Once I was satisfied with the layout and was sure everything would fit well, I ordered everything. I should note here that budget is also important. Even if you have an unlimited bank account you don't want to spend it all on one space.
